Passing on pet crates, gear and supplies

Clean, check, price and list pet items so they go to a good home quickly.

Pets outgrow crates, beds and harnesses fast, and good gear is worth passing on. A little prep makes it easy for the next owner to say yes.

Clean and check

  • Wash beds and fabric covers. Scrub crates and bowls with hot soapy water and let them dry fully.
  • Check for chew damage, sharp edges, cracked plastic and broken latches. If it isn't safe, don't sell it.
  • Look up the product on the recall list (cpsc.gov/Recalls) if it's a branded item.

What's worth listing

  • Crates, carriers, gates, pens and ramps usually sell well.
  • Unopened food and treats: check the date and any store or platform rules on reselling food.
  • Gently used toys and leashes often go best in a bundle.

Listing details buyers want

  • Size and measurements (inside and outside for crates).
  • The pet size or weight range it was made for.
  • Whether it came from a home with smoking or other pets.
  • Photos with the doors open and latches shown.

Pricing

Look at what the same item sells for used nearby. Bundle the small stuff into one listing at one price. Large items that are hard to store are worth pricing to move.

Other options

Many shelters and rescues accept donated supplies. Call first, since needs change. Some community swaps and consignment events accept pet gear too; check the organizer's rules.

Meetups

Meet in a public place, and leave your own pet at home during the handoff.
